Speed Skating: Kato wins 4th national 500-meter title

NAGANO, Japan - Joji Kato (C) won the 500-meter title in 1 minute, 10.23 seconds at the speed skating national single-distance championships on Oct 27, his fourth 500-meter crown and his first in two years. Defending champion Keiichiro Nagashima (L) was second in 1:10.74 and Yuya Oikawa (R) third in 1:10.98.

HAMAR, Norway - Olympic champion and 500-meter world record holder Hiroyasu Shimizu of Japan skates in the men's 1,000 meters on the first day of the world speed skating sprint championships at Hamar Olympic Hall on Jan. 19. Shimizu had to settle for fourth in the 500 meters, missing out on a podium finish for the first time in 10 straight appearances in that distance, and closed the first day as Japan's highest placed men's skater in 13th with a total of 71.225 points.

Shimizu wins world 500-meter title in world record time
